Rain!
The falling rain went 'pitter patter, pitter patter'. It was dancing loudly through the sky, tapping on the rain forest. 'Howl' said the wind. The rain was powerful! In the morning the sun came out.
Brooke
The wild miracle rain pitters loudly on the roof in the morning This wicked grumpy water thuds to the ground in big drips into puddles. Soon, it will hopefully give up. It was annoying.
Lucy
The quiet cold raindrops were pitter patting softly in the damp cloudy day. Bushy rain clouds grew darker. The rain tapped harder. Stronger! Madder! Wildly knocking and crashing. The rain smells like a rain forest. This time the poor cruel rain gave up - resting in through the damp day.
Lilianei
The impolite rain taps gently on the roof asking to come in. It sounds like a quiet mouse. Next time it demands to enter. Rat a tat tat. Thump, thump, thump. A wild rain forest is out my window. The morning arrives. The rain has given up. Silent at last. Perri

Learning at Maniototo Area School
The script for this movie was collaboratively developed by 5, Year 3 students. We used Collaborize Classroom online to do this. It was proof read and edited and recorded into a movie. Most of the images were taken by these students and developed on Windows Live Movie Maker. The aim was to reflect on what learning was like at Maniototo and why its great to be here.
Biscuits for our buddies!
On the last of school we wanted to do something a good sort would do. We baked some biscuits, enough for us and the Kindy kids and went across the paddock to visit our preschool buddies. We read them a story then sat on the deck with a friend and a biscuit! The sun was shining and the playground was super inviting. We all got time to explore some fun activities before heading back to school to clean up. We found out that little kids can do lots and they can do so many learning activities. We also found out it is hard to read to little children and getting them to listen. A super good sort morning which we are all keen to do again.

Meet Louie
Louie the parrot came to visit with the help of Ashleigh and her mum. Her really enjoyed showing off his wings, colours and manuveres. We had so many questions about how to look after a big parrot and all of the special things he can do. Thank you so much Ashleigh for taking the time to show us something so special.

Describing the Maniototo
Stories from Kowhai Author's
The soft, crunchy snow lays on the pointy tips of the mountain. The sun pushes down on the snow as it gets lighter and lighter. The sun glazes on the mountain tops.
Standing like a statue in the wilderness all of the mountains bunch up in a long line. Feeling relaxed I look at the mountains. A feeling that brushes through me.
Written by Abby Year 3
White deep snow sits silent on the mountain top, shrinking from the rain. Stones crunch up and fall through a rainy evening. The freezing snow slips from the edge. Ginormous mountains come from plates of land. The powerful sun melts the snow creating shimmering lakes and rivers. The mountains with huge valleys all different shapes and sizes.
Written by Perri Year 3
I'm standing at the foot of the mountain. The snow freezing mountains stand tall in the field in the morning sun. They stand squahed together not moving never able to seperate or take into flight. Crunch! IAs I walk over the snow it sounds like rocks under my feet. The shiny misty gullys collect snow catching it as it falls.
Splash! The snow melts. Freezing!
written by Lucy Year 2
One powerful day the mountains were asleep. The gold miners trucks and diggers and loaders came. They woke the mountains up. The madness came to the gold mine reckless and working. Workers returned to their homes. The mountains went back to a peaceful sleep.
Written by Case McDonald Year 3
The breezy wind blowing through the mountains. The snow was perfectly landing on the flat mountain tops. Paddocks are dirty and dry. The sun was powerfully pushing down on the flaky snow. There were puffy dark clouds. The breeze tumbles the snow away.
Written by Brooke Year 2
Standing lonely on a silvery path. Skipping - steady, stretching, gently balancing on one foot. Shyly walking through the breezy wind. Leaping, silently pushing the ball across the road.

My Day Skiing
I went on a ski trip. It was cold with little breezes and white surfaces. I had long ski's that were hard to control. The slopes were all different sizes. Some big and some small. There were children everywhere. I was trying not to bump into them.
Carlie and I wanted to do different things. The problem was we only ad one adult. The problem got bigger as Charlie go tired. There were friends to help us. Hooray!!

The Tunnel
Down, down, down through the beautiful tunnel, following the endless path. Covered in spring coloured flowers and shiny green leaves that sway in the rocky wind. In Autumn everything will change, the leaves. The tunnel leads me home from my adventure.

The wind blew strongly and the cotton candy clouds fall out of the sky. The sky dissappeared back into the clouds again.

World War One good sorts
Mrs Inder kindly came into Kowhai class today to read us a beautiful story about WW1 called The Red Poppy. We found out that dogs are good sorts also by helping wounded soldiers in the war. We loved meeting Su, the Labrador dog who came to visit us. She was wearing her Red Cross cape.

Mapping Ranfurly
Can you see your home? We made a scale model of Ranfurly to learn about maps, scale and position. Lots of conversations and learning - not to mention fun. Lego is such a great learning tool.

In the Playground

The frosty ice was tickling through my back. It made me chilly. I shivered. When I walked to school it looked like diamonds.
Sienna
The playground was like an icicle. The sun made the ice shiny. I nearly slip over. The ice went down my back making me shiver. As I slid down the poles it made me go very slowly. It hurt!
Chevy

The slide was slippery and icy from the frost. The bridge was slippery like an ice rink that no one can go on.
Case.

Hide and Seek Stories
Hide and Seek Stories
Hide and seek is a time to bond with your friends. It's time to have a laugh. It's fun!
I hide in the closet, squashed up, scrunched in a ball, feeling scared in the dark quivering, shivering with fright. I hear voices. They have been found.
I bang on the wall. "Boo!" 'Argh". I won! Good game.
Written by Perri (7)
I feel fearless as I stretch out. Shocked and scared I hug the ground. I am scared. Someone is knocking on the door! "Rrrrrr" I spread out on the ground. It feels terrifying. "Your in!" they said.
Written by Brook (7)
I feel afraid and confused, playing hide and seek. I feel like I am going to scream and my body is going to move!

Making Crabapple Lemonade
We found so many crab apples in the trees at school we had a go at making some crabapple lemonade. Yum! The recipe is below if you would like to try this at home. We also did some writing trying to explain what it tastes like when we bottled it. Of course you have to leave it for two weeks after being bottled for it to become fizzy. Our final tasting proved it does get fizzy but only appeals to some taste buds.

Crabapple Lemonade
This recipe can be made from yellow or red crabapples, but while both are delicious, the red ones naturally give a better colour. This recipe makes approximately 5 litres.
875g crabapples, washed and roughly chopped
875g sugar
1½ lemons, sliced
200ml white or cider vinegar
20 cups cold water
Place all ingredients in a food safe bucket and mix well. Cover loosely with a tea towel and leave to stand for 2 days. Strain through a sieve and pour the resulting liquid into bottles, filled only to the neck. Seal the bottle immediately. (You can re-use empty soft drink bottles, but be sure that they are very clean)
The lemonade will be ready in one to two weeks. Test for readiness by carefully unscrewing the lid to see if it has developed its “fizz”.
Chill well before serving and always open carefully.

Learning about the earths structure
Kowhai kids used their models they made of the earth structure to explain what they now know about earths crust, mantle and core. The whiteboards helped them to explain in more detail and for Tawa kids to draw their new learning.
